What is this building?
Hi Rob – fortunately there is a brief history of this listed building elsewhere on this website: built as Assembly Rooms it had a ballroom, library etc; at one time it became a music hall and later on a supermarket. (This comes up if you google ‘The Parthenon Leamington Spa’ – I’m not clever enough to add a link to this comment!)
I used to live in Liptons, when this fire started in 1969, we were evacuated, very early ,in the morning. Probably about 4am, with my parents. Has anyone got any more pictures.
From Historic England listing: Royal Assembly Rooms and then the Royal Music Hall, known as The Parthenon, now shops. circa 1821 by Samuel Beazley, London theatre architect and dramatist for R Elliston, the manager of the Drury Lane Theatre. Facades restored and repaired after 1960s fire damage, rebuilt to rear, late 20th century ground-floor shop fronts. Brick with painted stucco front facades, unpainted to left (No.50) and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron balcony to centre range.
