Has Kineton House been demolished, and if so what is on the site now? My great grandfather was George Baldwin whose brother Arthur worked as a chauffeur at the house.
Hi Theresa and thanks for your interesting comment. I consulted the wonderful maps on the Warwickshire County Record Office website (look under ‘Catalogues and Databases’ and then ‘Compass’ to find them). Kineton house is there on OS maps from the 1880s, 1900s and 1955. On a later map (1950-1980) it is ‘Norton School’ with added buildings and on current maps it appears to be housing called ‘The Mansion House’ and ‘Norton Grange’. Does anyone who has been there know if the old building survives? By the way I was interested to note that The Kennels nearby still house the Warwickshire Foxhounds!
I’m sure the building is still there as it has been converted into flats and forms part of the Norton Grange housing complex, along with the original workers’ houses, plus new buildings. The clock tower in the photo has been demolished though, along with 2 houses that used to stand on the road behind it. I used to live in one of them as a child, my dad was the gardening instructor at Norton School. In the early 60s we moved to 3 The Copse, which is still there.
Theresa, my great grandfather is also George Baldwin, my grandfather was Jack. We visited Kineton last week and it’s not easy to see Kineton House. Aunty Kit’s house is still in Kineton but Aunty Moll’s shop is now a new house.
Were you there when Double Grandad turned 100 and the hunt came to Aunty Moll’s house? I remember is so clearly (I was 11)
Yes I was there 1965 1967 it was an approved school I also worked on the farm I was in charge of the pigs I also milked the cows and drove the tractor spreading the manure over the fields and then in the summer collecting the bales of hay and stacking them in the barn for the winter months, can not remember farmers name but hes was a good bloke firm but fair
The farmers name was Mr Cook. I too was there from 1966 to 1968. Played for the football team. Mr Lee was the gym teacher, we called him “Trill” after the budgie seed, which made budgies “bounce with health”. Mr Walker ran the tuck shop and was nicknamed “Ernie” after the premium bonds computer. I remember spending months digging the swimming pool!…. Overall, a very bad chapter in my life… but I learnt valuable lessons.

I was there 1969 – 1973. I worked on the farm and I canoed for the canoe club. I won the 125 mile race.
