My brothers and I have wonderful memories of Rupert Cottage where we stayed with our parents as children in the late 1950s and 1960s, visiting Agnes and Dick Wood. Agnes and Dick were friends of our parents. They always kept a couple of Wessex Saddleback pigs, which often had a litter in tow. Sometimes the runt of the litter would be nursed in the kitchen. Agnes, who was secretary to Lord Bearsted at Upton House, also kept chickens, and we loved collecting the eggs for her. Dick also kept a few sheep on land which i think he rented at the bottom of the hill. They had a good vegetable plot and were almost self-sufficient. They were kind, generous and full of fun. As animal-lovers they always had several terriers around, and at one time a retired foxhound called Bellman. Both Agnes and Dick hunted regularly with the Warwickshire Hunt.
The house was owned by the Upton estate. Agnes and Dick lived there for nearly 40 years. Agnes, who had been born in Barford, died first, in the 1980s I think, and Dick , the son of a farmer from Oxhill, died in the early 1990s.
