During the Summer when we had gone early to Rugby Swimming baths all the wet trunks and towels ere spread on that terrace wall to dry.
The headmaster and owner (1955) was a Mr Attic, it was a great school and was well known for providing a relevant education for the sons of farmers. Mike Sutton lived above a sweet shop near the Rugby theatre. Went to his birthday party. We had a great Rugby team. The parents built a school swimming pool in the grounds. The house and grounds were sold when Mr Attic died for housing estate.
Cars, cars. When I was at Longrood in the mid 1950s, Mr Attic had a Wolseley 1500, as did my Dad, so I felt that gave me the right to discuss cars with him, which he kindly tolerated. A little later, one of the masters bought a bright red Frogeye Sprite, with which we were all very impressed. I suspect he was hoping to score points with the gym mistress, though I’m not sure young men in little sports cars were really her thing!
Mrs Attic ran the school for a short time after Mr Attic died. I was the youngest boarder when the school closed. The head boy was Bozzie Carter and before that Trulove. I was never aware of any bullying, I have very happy memories of my time there and the food was great, the chef was such a nice chap. I remember one of the masters calling us out of prep to see the first Sputnik whizzing past. There were quite a few farmers sons there I remember.
(1952) when I was at Longrood Mr Attic drove us to Rugby swimming baths in his Alvis. I have strong memories of the wet swimming trunks – in the car coming back. I believe a Sutton was there then not sure if it was Michael.
