Comments
A cursory glance at a geological map negates the possibility of there being any coal to extract. A possibility is that the term is a corruption of Coalpit which occurs in the form of Coalpit lane near Wolston, and may be one of those terms such as Lunt (as in the Lunt Cottages Baginton) that refer to geographical features. In the case of Lunt I think I remember that it related to a steep bank.
Apparently early forms of charcoal burning rather than a stack used an embanked pit to produce charcoal, which reminds me that the term coal can also mean the hot burning embers in a wood fire. Possibly coalpit was a charcoal pit, or a place used for producing potash by burning wood for use as fertiliser.
