Notes about this historic site
1 Boatloads of crude tar were carried from here to MTD distilleries at Banbury by Thomas Clayton Ltd in narrow boats with tank holds. The works closed in the 1960s and have been very recently demolished.

My Great Grandma and Grandad had an Off Licence in Priory Street, Leamington, and she used to serve the men who worked at the gas works, her name was Ada Hall. Have got a photo of my dad in priory street when he was young, I use to go there as well when I was little, it would have been in the 1920s.
My Great Uncle Harry Swadling had properties on the canal by the gasworks, probably around 1940-1950s.His wife Pollie, I think used to collect rents from the tenants. I remember her using the word ‘bobbydazzler’, for something or someone very pretty but which I later found out is a canal word for the light on a narrow boat. Always wondered where it came from.
