In the 1950s, there were many garages. I often used the garage on waterside called The Warwickshire. The garage in Windsor Street, Greenhill Street, Gill Street and separate petrol stations.
Lots of the garages sold petrol as well. In Bridge Street there was Hensons the butchers and a slaughterhouse – the animals were driven into the slaughterhouse off the street. These animals were killed behind the butchers and this was quite common in those days. There was later a general slaughterhouse in Ely Street which probably served a smaller butchers. There was the labels factory in Old Town and a telephone exchange by the canal in Warwick Road.

I was born at Luddington in 1944.
Went to school in Shottery and then at Hugh Clopton School for Boys.
Garages: Bollands were in Henley St running through to Guild St. Guyvers were in Windsor St running through to Rother Market. There was the Titchmarsh “Arden Garages”, Ford dealership in Henley St.
But a petrol station in “Gill St.,” ? Where is “Gill St.,”?
The slaughter house in Eley St was almost opposite the Queens Head Pub, there wasn’t a butchers there. I think it was the FMC slaughter house?
There was Hughes the Butchers in West Street?
Hensons butchers was “Stan Henson” who was also a farmer, always wore a straw boater.
Tibor Reich had his fabric shop in Eley St., and his factory at the old Clifford Mill.
My Father had his accountancy practice in Central Chambers, opposite formerly “JC Smiths”, later, Debenhams.
Good researching,
Henry Hobbs
PS John Shaylor at the Town Hall will know a lot as well.
There was Shaylor’s Garage Citroen dealership of the Birmingham Road.
Henry Hobbs again. A correction: Arden Garages wasn’t in Henley Street, they were at the top of Arden Street on the junction with the Birmingham Road. Sorry for the error!
There was a toy shop in Stratford in the 1960s – I would have said in the High Street, though this seems unlikely now – what was its name?
Sleath’s
I lived in Welford on Avon and can remember Sleaths in the High street which was just along the road from Midland Educational. I also remember Tibor Riech’s shop in Ely street. It was there that I saw a superb collection of toy cars, lorries and trains. This toy collection can now be seen in Coventry transport museum.. My first job was with the Stratford Borough council in Rother street and Iremember Knotts cycles on the corner of Greenhill street and Windsor street. Also remember the Blue Star garage opposite the bus station at Bridgefoot.
Petrol station in ‘Gill street’ would be the petrol station in Guild street.
I rememember it as an Esso garage.
It was opposite the vets on Guild street, just across from Tyler street
remember the spot garage in Greenhill st

In the 1940s and early 50s at the top of Bridge Street just around the corner to High Street there was a jewellers. Does anybody have a picture or know the name of this shop?
I worked at Loggins the chemist in the High street when I left school ,Mr Danks was my boss.Lots of the actor’s from the theatre used to come in. Remember Brenda Bruce, Ian Richardson, Margaret Tyzack and Eric Porter.
Hiltons shoe shop was next to Loggins, Brian Wilson.

Having a disagreement. Where exactly was Liptons?
Does anyone remember the Clover Leaf Milk Bar in Stratford on Avon from the 1940’s & 50’s.
I think it wasa in Guild street or Henley Street
Liptons was on High Street in between Midland Educational (great place as a child – remember the well they exposed and lit!?) and Marks the Chemist (worked there as a teenager)
Liptons had a cafe upstairs – as did Pargetters.
Pargetters used to bake a harvest loaf for school assembly!
I was at Henley High School and remember going to Pargetters on the ‘ Stratford Blue’ bus for cream cakes. I seem to remember they had a very popular cellar cafe.
The garage on Guild Street was an Esso station called Centenary Garage (70’s) and is now the drive-in cleaners. Centenary then moved to Timothys Bridge Road.
