One of my family members owned the Wharf Tavern seen in the background, which I have visited.
The smaller shops on the left of the photo were demolished in the 1960s, the tiny shop between, used to be a radio shop was run by a Mr Jelliffe. The next four buildings were two shops and two houses. The first of the shops was a butchers and still is in 2019. My grandparents (Dwight) had the next shop as a greengrocers from around 1912 to 1956. The next two were built as houses but have been adapted sometime to be used as a cafe then newsagents and latterly as a cafe when it was part of the hairdressers next door which used to be a drapers in the 1950s. In the centre of the photo just over the canal bridge can be seen the end of the Wharf public house.
