My father, Brian Richardson aged15, on VE night had his first drink in a pub, a pint of Shandy in the Red Lion. He lived in Wasperton at the time and had been driven over with two friends in a Morris 8. Normally they wouldn’t be served but the landlord made an exception as it was VE Day! He’s 91 this year.
A long time ago a landlord of the Red Lion was known to be handy with his fists. There was also someone else from nearby Wasperton with similar tendencies, who was a bully as well. Both had been offered a lot of money to fight in the ring. One night the person from Wasperton went into the Red Lion for a drink. Not liking his attitude the landlord made him wait. Not surprisingly a fight broke out between the two which lasted for nearly an hour. In the end the bully lost, much to the delight of everyone!
