Diary of a WW1 Nuneaton Soldier, Part 3 of 4

Birthdays not for celebrating

The third section of the diary, continuing on from part two. This section covers Clark’s birthday, although there is less of a desire to maintain ‘normality’ here than in the earlier section, and this event is glossed over. This section describes the more mundane actions of trench warfare, with Clark being given a regular job of testing the comms lines.

The size and coverage of the trenches is brought home, “any one can soon lose themselves” whilst the call to familiarity is brought home by the names given the trenches, one being known as Tottenham Court Road.

Part four, the final part, can be found here.
