With the recent snowfall in the county (a tiny sprinkling in Leamington) it reminded me of snow days and skating on the iced Welches Meadow off Willes Road in Leamington.
The meadow is cared for by Warwick District Council and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and it is believed to have been created as a flood defence in the 1840s.
Lots of wildflowers, birds and other wildlife
The area is approximately 17 acres and has lots of wildflowers, birds and other wildlife. There is a noticeboard to give details of what you can see.
I remember as a child in the 70s and 80s going to nearby Newbold Comyn to sledge and Welches Meadow to skate when it had frozen over. It was always very busy and there were people on proper skates whizzing around whereas we were just sliding along in our wellies. My mum remembers skating on the ice when she was a child in the 1930s.
Did you skate on the meadow? What wildlife have you seen there?

I didn’t skate on Welches meadow but can remember using anything that slid down the Campion Hills, I ended up at A & E with a gash in my leg where I came off a dustbin lid sliding down in the snow. Also at the bottom of the hill was a dirt race track where the lads used to race. One boy was called “Skid Phillips” and he lived in Queen Street
Hi Wendy, I remember seeing people on plastic bags and tin tea trays whizzing down Campion Hills but not dustbin lids! Well done.
I was born in Arno Villa, the house that fronts onto the welches meadow. My dad used to give me and one of my sisters a bucket each and send us off to see who could collect the most grass snakes. Kept us amused for hours.
